All five relationships to level 7: the quest each one needs and the answer not to give

Sciel, Monoco, Maelle, Lune and Esquie at level 7 are five trophies, and they also unlock the level 3 Gradient Attack and Esquie’s diving. When each level opens, which quest the step from 5 to 6 requires and the Maelle answer that ruins it all.

And it counts towards Monoco, Maelle, Lune, Esquie, Curious, Chroma Proficiency, Plane, Train, and Submarine, required for the platinum.

How relationships work

Relationships rise by talking to each companion at camp, from Act II. Each new level opens as the story advances, and level 7 arrives with Act III. All five sit between Monoco’s 32.1% and Sciel’s 35.9%, not far from the 43.2% who finish the story.

Except in one case, the answers you pick do not matter. The exception is Maelle. And the step from level 5 to 6 almost always takes more than a chat: a quest, an optional zone or a fight.

It is worth it because each relationship pays twice: level 7 gives that character’s level 3 Gradient Attack, needed for Chroma Proficiency, and several level 6s give records for Connoisseur. Esquie’s unlocks Verso’s Gradients and teaches him to dive.

What each one asks to go from level 5 to 6

The jump from level 5 to 6 is where people get stuck. This is what each one requires, and what level 6 gives.

TrophyLevel 5 to 6What level 6 gives
Sciel (35.9%)Just a conversationA record
Esquie (34.6%)Solo fight with Verso, which starts without warningThe diving ability
Lune (34.2%)Recover a journal guarded by a boss in an optional zoneA record (and the journal counts for Follow The Trail)
Maelle (33.7%)A whole optional zone and a boss Maelle fights aloneA cosmetic item
Monoco (32.1%)A boss near Old Lumière, with only Verso and MonocoA record
Careful

In the level 6 to 7 conversation with Maelle, pick the Truth answer. With the lie the relationship does not rise, no trophy and no level 3 Gradient. If you get it wrong, reload an earlier autosave.

What they unlock: the level 3 Gradient and Esquie’s fourth ability

Chroma Proficiency (32.1%) asks you to use a level 3 Gradient Attack, and that level only exists once the character reaches relationship 7. You also have to fill three bars in a single fight, which charge by spending AP and empty when the fight ends: do it against a boss with lots of health.

Plane, Train, and Submarine (37.4%) comes with Esquie’s relationship: swimming, coral and flying come with the story, but diving comes with his level 6. And the first optional campfire scene, after Flying Waters, gives Curious (68.4%): it is the habit worth picking up from the start.

Other Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 guides

Clair Obscur’s four missables, and two of them are in the prologue
The platinum fits in one playthrough if none of this slips: the prologue Mime, the camp scene after the first Axon, the Truth answer to Maelle and never killing a Nevron with a quest. What can be missed, when, and what is no longer missable after 1.5.0.
Journals, records and Gestrals: the collectibles are rarer than Simon
Clair Obscur’s two rarest trophies are collectibles: 49 journals and 33 records, in a game with no per-zone counter. What each one counts, how many there are, what requires flying with Esquie and the detail that stops the Nevron quests from popping.
Clair Obscur optional bosses: what order to do them in and how to reach Simon
Sprong, the Chromatic Pétank, the Serpenphare, Clea, the Painting Workshop, the 33 Endless Tower fights and Simon: the order that makes each one easier than the last, the trick to each fight and how to get Professional without risk.
One trophy per character: Overcharge, Stains, Virtuose Stance, Foretell, Rank S and Monoco’s wheel
Each character has their own mechanic and a trophy that tests it. How to set each one up on purpose, which enemy to do it against and why Monoco’s, at 30.1%, is the hardest.
Level 99 and a weapon at 33: the only part of the platinum that is grind
Six progression trophies: the first weapon upgrade, a weapon at level 33, Lumina and levels 33, 66 and 99. Which material is always missing, why level 99 is best left for just before Simon and where levelling is fastest.
All 18 story trophies, act by act, and what to do in each
No story trophy can be missed, but each act opens something the platinum needs: the Curator, relationships, Esquie’s flight. From the prologue’s 84.9% to the ending’s 43.2%, with what to do in each stretch.
