The 52 crowns: which monsters count and how to cut the hunt short

Crowns are the Monster Hunter Wilds platinum: the two Master trophies sit at 6.5% and 6.1%, one step from the platinum's 5.3%. The 26 monsters that count, the ones that do not, and the shortcuts that turn weeks into afternoons.

What counts: 26 monsters, 52 crowns

There are six crown trophies. Two come on their own or nearly: Giant Crown (80.8%), with the alpha Doshaguma in chapter 1, and Miniature Crown (50.1%). The other four are the platinum wall: Giant Crown Collector (19.3%) and Miniature Crown Collector (12.5%) ask for 10 monsters, and Giant Crown Master (6.5%) and Miniature Crown Master (6.1%) ask for all of them.

All means the 26 launch monsters whose size varies: the 29 large monsters in the base game minus Jin Dahaad, Guardian Arkveld and Zoh Shia, which are always the same size. Monsters added by the free updates do not count. That is 26 gold crowns and 26 miniature crowns: 52.

And a detail that saves wasted hours: crowns are only recorded in Field Surveys and Investigations. Story mission monsters have a fixed size and, apart from the chapter 1 Doshaguma, everything is hunted in High Rank.

Careful

If you hunted an update monster with a crown, it does not help. Check the list below: it is these 26 and no others.

The 26 monsters and where they appear

Each one needs a gold crown and a miniature crown. Those that live in several regions give more chances; single-region ones, like the apex predators, can be forced by setting Inclemency when you rest, because they always appear in that phase. Arkveld can show up in any region.

The shortcuts that cut the hunt

Binoculars. At about 50 metres the crown appears under the monster's name. Never fight anything that does not have one. The first time you spot a gold one this way you get A Keen-eyed Observation (22.2%).

Resting. At the grill or in the tent you choose the time and weather, which reshuffles the monsters in every region. It is how you roll the dice again.

Investigations. When you find a crown, save it as an Investigation before fighting: you can hold 50 and each one replays the same monster at the same size several times. If you fail, you do not lose the crown.

Trading. Whoever joins your crown Investigation gets the crown too. With a group of friends, everyone contributes what they find and the 52 come in hours. You can also hop from lobby to lobby looking for hunts with the crown you are missing.

Save and reload. The map shows when each monster will spawn. Save about 30 seconds before, offline, and if it arrives without a crown, quit to the menu without saving and reload. Any closer to the spawn and the size is already decided.

Tempered monsters. They have a higher chance of a gold crown. The hunts for Seasoned Hunter are the best place to look.

Key

Monster Ph.D. (53.7%) comes along the way: it asks you to hunt each of the 29 launch monsters once, and the crown list already makes you go through 26 of them.
