All 18 Ninja Gaiden 4 Purgatory Gates: where each one is
One gate per chapter except 14, always off the main path. And the warning that costs hours: the ones in the Challenge menu don't count.
And it counts towards Challenger of Challenges, Master of Takeminakata, Master of Yatousen, Master of Magatsuhi, Master of Kage-Hiruko, required for the platinum.
One per chapter, and always off the path
Ninja Gaiden 4 has 19 chapters and 18 Purgatory Gates: one in each except Chapter 14, which has none.
The pattern repeats often enough to be worth internalising: the gate is always down the path the game does NOT want you to take. Where the mission sends you up a staircase, the gate is down; where it sends you across a bridge, it's in the alley beside it. Almost all of them end in a dead end.
Beyond the achievement, they're the game's main source of weapon XP. The five mastery achievements want 12 skills per weapon at around 350,000 points each, and without the gates that maths doesn't work.
The gates have to be done inside the story, not from the Challenge menu. Completing them there doesn't count towards Annihilator, and it's the mistake that costs the most hours in this game.
Do them on the lowest difficulty
It's confirmed that for Challenger of Challenges completing them on the lowest difficulty, Hero, is enough. The same goes for the boss trials.
That changes the whole plan: there's no reason to fight them on Master Ninja. Set Hero, close them quickly and save the high difficulty for the achievement that actually demands it, which is finishing the game.
The reward does scale with difficulty — they pay more XP and more NinjaCoin higher up — so if you have time to spare and need weapon XP, raising it makes sense. For the achievement, it doesn't.
All 18 gates, chapter by chapter
The gate numbering and the chapter numbering stop matching from 14 onwards, because that chapter has none. From there, gate 14 is in Chapter 15, gate 15 in Chapter 16, and so on.
| Chapter | Where the gate is |
|---|---|
| 1 | Just before using the Caddis Wire a second time to jump between buildings, turn left: you'll see three dump trucks parked side by side. Run past them, turn left into an alley and use the flying bird technique. The gate is on the roof, right in front of you. |
| 2 | In the area with the flying enemies and the drones: scale the large building with the Caddis Wire, turn right and cross the blue shipping containers to a different monorail track inside a ruined building. That track doesn't glow orange. Grind along it, jump off and go up some stairs. |
| 3 | After rising up the shaft with the flying bird flip at the start of the chapter, turn around and follow the alley instead of crossing the bridge ahead. Dead end. |
| 4 | Crossing the canyon with the Caddis Wire you end up on a narrow ledge where the game wants you to scale a rock wall with the bird flip. Turn around and walk away from the path: the narrow trail leads to the gate. |
| 5 | Past the temple ruin with the chest, in the next area the game wants you to jump a ravine. Drop down into the valley below and follow the path back: the gate sits at the top of a small set of stairs. |
| 6 | Past the shops, you briefly use the Dragonfly Glider to land on some wooden platforms. Instead of continuing left, use the Caddis Wire on the right to swing across the gap and follow the path. |
| 7 | At the start of the chapter, take the stairs down to the right instead of up the main path. At the end of the path is the gate, with a collectible sitting right behind it. |
| 8 | After clearing the room with the two enemy spawn portals — shortly after unlocking the Pond Strider — walk through the door. Instead of going left, go right around a hallway, use the bird flip and then the Pond Strider to surf along a pipe. |
| 9 | In the open area you cross with the Pond Strider: jump into the water from where you start and surf along the left side to a cave entrance. The gate is at the back. |
| 10 | The chapter opens in a tunnel with two stores and a few enemies. Once they're dead, take the optional path to your right past the stores instead of staying in the main tunnel. At the end you open a door and there it is. |
| 11 | This chapter does have its gate, but we don't give the exact spot: it's the only one of the 18 our source doesn't describe. Apply the pattern from the rest — the path the mission doesn't ask for — and check the detours that end in a dead end. |
| 12 | In the area where you fight the two heavy enemies — the launcher one and the melee one — turn left and swing along the Caddis Wire section. Keep straight on the optional path, through a door, and the gate is up the stairs in the next room. |
| 13 | Right at the start of the chapter, turn around and walk down the stairs. Turn left, use the Caddis Wire to reach the walkway above, left again and two more wire points onto a railway track. Grind and wall-run to the end: the gate is up a flight of stairs. |
| 14 | No gate here. It's the only one of the 19 chapters without one, which is why there are 18 gates and not 19. |
| 15 | The gate is on the left-hand platform, in the same room as the previous collectible. |
| 16 | In the area with the giant doll head in the sky, turn right and follow the way past a shop. Wall run, a couple of gap jumps and a dead end. It's the exact same spot as the Chapter 1 gate. |
| 17 | At the start of the chapter, take the optional path to the right instead of going up the stairs. Use the Caddis Wire and jump to the next platform: the gate is at the end. |
| 18 | You reach a white cube-shaped room with pipes on every wall. The main path leads up a staircase; you want to go through the metal barricades on your left. At the end of the short hallway is the second-to-last gate. |
| 19 | The same spot as the Chapter 18 gate. The only difference is that you're now playing as Yakumo rather than Ryu. |
