All 20 Ninja Gaiden 4 bosses and why the second half repeats them

The game's 20 bosses in chapter order, the rematch structure nobody explains, and the 14 boss trials including the one that only appears if you kill a secret boss.

Twenty fights, fourteen different bosses

Ninja Gaiden 4 has 20 boss fights spread across its 19 chapters, but they aren't twenty different enemies: the second half of the game replays the first half's fights.

Cetus, killed in Chapter 10, returns in 15. The Kitsune Courtesan from Chapter 3 reappears in 16. Kurobo, from 7, comes back in 17. And the commander and Proto-Goliath from the opening repeat in Chapter 12.

That isn't filler: it's what makes Master Ninja manageable. By the rematch you already know the pattern, and you arrive with twenty levels of extra skills. If a boss is grinding you down on the first pass, remember you'll meet them again far better equipped.

The 20 bosses by chapter

Chapters 4, 6 and 8 have no boss. Chapters 12, 13 and 19 have two or three each.

The 14 boss trials and the one that hides

Challenger of Challenges wants three families: 18 combat trials, 18 Purgatory Gates and 14 boss trials. The boss ones unlock once the campaign is done, and number 13 is also the one that gives you the Dark Dragon Blade.

Two warnings that separate the people who get the achievement from the ones stuck one trial short:

Trial 14 only exists in New Game+. Like Work Horse, this achievement forces a second run by design, not by oversight.

And players report that an extra boss trial only appears after defeating a secret boss — the thief in his final form, in Chapter 6 — or after beating Oniwaka's last form. No official guide covers it, but it's the most repeated explanation among players who have done every trial and still haven't seen the achievement pop.

Careful

Combat trials have fixed difficulties, from normal to hard, and you can't lower them. The advice to do everything on Hero applies to the Purgatory Gates and the boss trials, not to these.
