The 8 shamisen songs: the collectible to do first
Each song is a collectible detector. Getting them before anything else turns the game's three hundred-odd pieces into following an arrow. Here are all eight, including the one that comes down to chance.
And it counts towards Fireside Performance, required for the platinum.
Why this collectible goes first
Ghost of Yōtei has over three hundred collectibles. The shamisen songs number eight, and each one of them finds you an entire group of the others.
You play them by swiping left on the touchpad, and the song guides you on its own to whatever it tracks: hot springs, vanity gear, Ainu items, Yōtei Six camps, bamboo strikes, wolf dens, shrine climbs. Eight songs, seven trackers.
Hence the recommendation: if you are going for the platinum, get all eight songs before you touch anything else. Combing the map by eye when you could have an arrow is throwing away hours.
And there is a second piece that multiplies this: the Robes for Sitturaynu armour, upgraded, guides you to the songs themselves — and to the sumi-e and the Pillars of the Fallen too. Armour first, songs second, is the order that costs the least time.
Nothing is missable: all eight are still there after the story.
Fireside Performance is held by 89.08%: it only asks you to play any one song while camping. If you have it, you are seven songs away from this other trophy.
The eight songs and what each one tracks
Two come on their own, two are at practice locations marked on the map, three come from side tales and one comes down to chance. That last one has its own section.
| # | Song | How you learn it | Guides you to |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Atsu's Song | Learned on its own in the prologue. Nothing to do. | — |
| 2 | Song of Well-Being | At the shamisen practice location in Ishikari Plain, along the north-west coastline. | Hot springs |
| 3 | Song of Vanity | At the practice location in Teshio Ridge, west of Red Crane Inn. | Vanity gear |
| 4 | Song of Revenge | In Tokachi Range, go to the map location "Musician's Camp", north of Shizunai Woods. A rōnin is playing there: give him a donation, talk to him, follow him to his camp and build him a campfire. Play your shamisen at the fire while he talks and he will teach you the song. | Yōtei Six camps |
| 5 | Song of the Ainu | It takes two side tales: The Soul of an Instrument, in Tokachi Range at the Ainu Musician's Camp; and A Melody of Thoughts, in Nayoro Wilds at the Cukpet Hills campsite. | Ainu items |
| 6 | Song of Spirit | Complete the side tale Master of the Shamisen, in Yotei Grasslands. | Bamboo strikes |
| 7 | Song of the Wolf | Close four wolf dens. After the fourth you automatically sit down to play and learn it. | Wolf dens |
| 8 | Song of Shrines | Random encounter while camping. See the next section. | Shrine climbs |
The eighth: the one that comes down to chance
Song of Shrines is not anywhere on the map. It is taught by a man who shows up at random when you make camp.
The method is this: hold the button near your horse to set up camp. There is a chance a character walks up to the fire, and this man is one of those possible encounters. Camp, sleep, fast travel elsewhere, repeat.
Two things that are not obvious:
Camping back to back does not work. After you get a random encounter it pays to let some time pass and do a side tale before making camp again. Chaining camps one after another triggers nothing.
Every confirmed sighting is in Ishikari Plain. It is not a guarantee — some people have hunted there without luck, and in theory he can appear in any region — but the spots where he has been seen are all in that area: the shoreline between Otaru Beach and Howling Cove, a campsite between Higashi Lumberyard and the Fire fox den, and a campfire between Broken Horn Garrison and Ishikari Market. If you are going to farm camps, farm them there.
One sign worth watching for: some people found him after stopping to camp on spotting a swirl of leaves on the road.
If you are one song short and do not know which, it is this one. The other seven are each tied to a place or a specific quest: none can slip past you unnoticed.
