What they are and how many there are
The Abyss challenges show up in the game menu as Restoration, and they are the biggest exploration subcategory after Secret Places. They come down to dropping into the Abyss rifts scattered around Pywel and clearing whatever is inside.
Completing all 40 unlocks their trophy, and they all count towards Expert Explorer as well, the gold that demands all nine exploration subcategories at 100%: 207 challenges in total.
When they are worth doing
It is the most common exploration trophy of all, at 8.08%, and the reason is simple: the abysses are visible on the map and sit on the way to almost everything. Plenty of people complete them without meaning to.
That said, some only unlock later in the story, so do not obsess over closing the category in your first few hours. Check it again once the campaign is done.
What we recommend
The abysses are also where Sealed Abyss Artifacts come from, so every trip down does two jobs at once. If you are in the initial sweep phase, go into every one you see even if the challenge is not active yet.
Key
No challenge counts until you have its Sealed Abyss Artifact, and progress is not recorded retroactively. Collect all 141 before getting serious about this subcategory.
