How these challenges work
There are 6 challenges, split between Hernand, which holds four, and Demeniss, which holds the other two. All three characters can swing a sword, so this is the least restrictive category in the game.
One ordering tip that saves hours: trials 1, 2 and 3 hand out enough artifacts to pay for the Sword Stab and Forward Slash upgrades, which are exactly the ones you need for trials 5 and 6. Do them in order.
Like every other challenge in the game, progress only starts counting once you have picked up the matching Sealed Abyss Artifact, and it does not count retroactively. The artifacts show up as purple icons on the minimap when you are close, and the sword's Guiding Light ability spots them from a distance.
